THERE IS / THERE ARE

Hai teman-teman pembelajar bahasa Inggris! 👋

Kamu pasti sering ingin mengatakan “ada sesuatu” dalam bahasa Inggris, kan?
Nah, untuk menyatakan “ada” (keberadaan suatu benda, orang, atau hal), kita menggunakan ungkapan “There is” dan “There are”.

📖 Apa itu “There is” dan “There are”?

There is dan There are digunakan untuk menyatakan keberadaan sesuatu — bahwa sesuatu ada di suatu tempat.

Artinya sama seperti “ada” dalam bahasa Indonesia.

🔹 1. THERE IS = Ada (satu benda/orang)

Gunakan There is untuk menyebut 1 hal atau benda tunggal (singular noun).

📍 Rumus:
There is + singular noun

🧩 Contoh kalimat:

  • There is a cat on the table. 🐈 → Ada seekor kucing di atas meja.
  • There is an apple in the basket. 🍎 → Ada sebuah apel di dalam keranjang.
  • There is a book on the desk. 📘 → Ada sebuah buku di meja.
  • There is a problem. 😕 → Ada sebuah masalah.

💡 Catatan:
Gunakan “a” atau “an” tergantung huruf awal katanya:

  • a → sebelum konsonan (a dog, a car)
  • an → sebelum vokal (an apple, an orange)

 

🔹 2. THERE ARE = Ada (lebih dari satu benda/orang)

Gunakan There are untuk menyebut lebih dari satu benda/orang (plural noun).

🗣️ Negative Form (Bentuk Negatif)

Untuk menyatakan tidak ada, kita tambahkan not.

🪄 Tips:
Gunakan “isn’t” (untuk tunggal) dan “aren’t” (untuk jamak).

 

❓ Question Form (Bentuk Pertanyaan)

Untuk membuat pertanyaan, cukup balik posisi “there” dan “is/are”.

1. What is a Verb?

A verb is one of the most important parts of speech in English.
It tells us what a subject does (an action), what happens (an event), or what something is (a state of being).

👉 In short:
A verb = an action word or a state of being.

Examples:

·         She runs every morning. → (action)

·         They play football on Sunday. → (action)

·         He is a teacher. → (state of being)

 

2. Types of Verbs

a. Action Verbs

These verbs show physical or mental actions.

·         Physical actions: run, jump, write, sing

·         Mental actions: think, believe, remember, understand

Examples:

·         I write a letter.

·         She believes in herself.

b. Linking Verbs

These verbs connect the subject to more information about it.
They do not show action but describe a state or condition.

Common linking verbs: be, become, seem, appear, feel, look, sound

Examples:

·         She is beautiful.

·         He became a doctor.

·         It looks interesting.

 

c. Helping Verbs (Auxiliary Verbs)

Helping verbs assist the main verb to form tenses, questions, or negatives.
